5 Master Editing Techniques Mini Analysis

In this clip from the series "Grey's Anatomy, Season 4 Episode 8", Dr. Yang is trying to prove to Doctor Haan that she is capable of being her right hand in surgery because of her love for cardio. Dr. Yang is very serious and attentive in this scene but she is so focused on getting the surgery for Dr. Haan that she forgets to let her intern students speak. Dr. Haan said that Dr. Yang should take more notes from her friend and then their pagers go off and the scene cuts to the ER with Dr. Shepard showing why their pagers are beeping. Dr. Bailey who is one of the top leading surgeons in the hospital happens to be there and one of the crash victims was her old crush. Instead of paying attention to a more important case, she decides to do scut work on her old crush. The scenes go back and fourth between Dr. Shepard and Dr. Baileys patients who are in complete opposite circumstances. Dr. Shepards patient is in critical condition with a pencil through his eye while Dr. Bailey's patient is sitting up and flirting with her. The cutting back between these two scenes creates a contrasting tone between the two. One being stressful and life threatening and the other being childlike and somewhat funny. The contrast between the two continues throughout the scene. They use Ariel, long, and wide shots to establish the feeling of how critical each patient is. When they showed the kid with the pencil through his eye they used low key lighting and a close up to establish the severity of his injury. This episode had a excellent contrast between seriousness and excitement to create a more edgy tone throughout the scene.

Narrative Sound Project

My group included Bella, Katerina, and I put together what I look at as a masterpiece. Once we heard about this project all started spitballing ideas until we made a precise plan. We decided to base our video off of a home break gone gruesome, following getting caught by the cops. When coming up with the different sounds we were going to use we had many ideas. But, only having access to several words to tell a story requires you to expand your creativity levels. We got creative when it came to creating our own sounds. My favorite part of the project was trying to make precise sounds with my group. All in all, we had a blast putting together this project. I believe we displayed our scenario very well and Katerina did an amazing job putting all of the sounds together.

In our group we divided the creation of the sounds among the group members. I was in charge of the foot steps, which we did in bathroom of the school. Surprisingly this sound had the most takes, it was difficult to have a quiet background so the sounds could vividly pop. Bella was in charge of the sirens. Luckily for us Bella has a special microphone that has loud sirens that perfectly mock a cop car or an emergency vehicle. We did not include every sound that we had planned to better the outcome of our storyline. Since our storyline was 'breaking in' we decided to use our words as "hands behind your back" to better display the presence of the cops arresting someone for doing something extreme.

Katerina put everything together and executed it perfectly. She did an amazing job putting the sounds together and putting the right amount of space between each sound. We added suspenseful music into the sound to show that it was an impactful part of the storyline.

Overall, I believe my group did an amazing job putting all of the sounds together and editing to better display our storyline of 'breaking in'.

One Word Film- Frustration

This film was a very fun film especially being that it was all based off of one word. I decided to use the word "frustration' for my film. I felt that this was a good fit for my film because this is a word that is involved in my life every single day. I feel that this is a very common feeling among anyone due to the amount of activities displayed throughout this film. I feel that this film turned out better than I expected it too and I enjoyed creating all of the different shots.

I started off the project with a completely different plan for each shot that what they came out to be. I had to rearrange some of the angles in order for everything to fall into line smoothly. I added and expanded my ideas as the film went
my film was displaying my frustration towards lockers.

I have been attending this school for seven years and it still takes me forever to open my locker. it demonstrates how my frustration enhances throughout the film after it took forever to get my locker open. In this short film my first shot is the establishing shot which is, The junior and senior hallway which is where most of my shots were taken. My overall video was supposed to display frustration. In the beginning of the video I cannot get my locker open so I was frustrated and it led to me kicking the trashcan and punching the locker.

I feel that all of my ideas were given life within my video and represented my overall goal by the end of the project. Being that I did the project on my own, it was a little more difficult than average to get the shots that I would have preferred. For some shot I had to set up my camera in order for the shot to display the proper angles.

Once I used iMovie to edit everything together the video really came to life to display my one word film.

5 Master Editing Techniques Film Project

This film project was different then any other project I have ever done in school. I enjoyed making videos and brainstorming ideas with my partners. I feel that for my first film project it came out pretty well.It was cool to connect some elements of my everyday life into my project to display the editing techniques used in the film. Making videos for my project was not a hassle whatsoever it was more enjoyable working with friends to add each others humor into the video.

Contrast was the first editing technique we used. In this video we displayed the difference between the extremes of most students likely activities. As you can see in the first clip it shows how Katerina is a good student, but she also has some great basketball skills. Showing that even though the two activities are very different she is still capable of doing both.

Next we have parallelism. This shot shows two similar things connecting. As you can see the water pouring into bella’s mouth and how it transitions into the sink water faucet running. This is my personal favorite out of the five techniques because of how it shows the similarity between two separate things.

After that we have symbolism which was the deepest shot in my opinion because you have to connect the meaning between two completely different things in order to display an underlying meaning towards how they connect. Our group showed one of us leaving practice, getting in their car and driving away and then it connects it to a bird flying away to represent freedom.

The next shot was a simultaneous shot which is a very common shot that i tend to see in movies and tv shows. One of my personal favorites of this was mean girls when they had all the girls going behind each others backs talking on the phone. Our example of this shot was of Sarah going back and fourth on the phone talking about school.

Last but not least was leif motiff. This video shows Sarah walking home sad and tired then being excited to see her puppy. It is a short but reassuring phase that shows what she does everyday after school.
